What Is Detoxing and How Does It Work?

By Andrijana Ikonic April 18, 2021

It’s safe to say detox diets are more popular than ever these days. We hear about their outstanding effects online, on social media, from friends and family members… They are everywhere.

So what does detoxing mean? What happens when you detox? And is detoxing good for you? That’s what we’re going to find out in this blog post.

What is detox?

Detoxing (or detoxication) refers to detox diets designed to cleanse your body naturally and eliminate all harmful toxins. These diets are usually short-term, involving a period of fasting, followed by a rigid diet of vegetables, fruits, fruit juices, and water. Depending on the type of diet, detoxing can include herbs, teas, or supplements to power the cleansing benefits.

In other words,

Detoxification or detoxication (detox for short) is the physiological or medicinal removal of toxic substances from a living organism, including the human body, which is mainly carried out by the liver.

The detoxification process happens in the liver or kidneys, so detox diets claim to promote these organs’ natural function and help them get rid of toxins more efficiently.

Is detoxing good for you?

Detox diets claim to eliminate harmful toxins from your body, ultimately benefiting your health in multiple ways. Detoxing may improve your circulation, provide you with healthy nutrients, help your organs rest, and stimulate your liver.

The biggest reason why detoxing is recommended is to limit the exposure to toxic chemicals found in regular diets. These are pollutants, heavy metals, synthetic chemicals, and other harmful compounds.

Still, more research is needed to determine whether detoxing can really deliver the result it promises as the current studies lack proof.

When is the right time to detox your body?

Detoxification might be a good idea for you if you suffer from constant fatigue, irritated skin, and blemishes, allergies, poor immunity, bloated eyes, frequent mood changes, poor gastrointestinal elimination, etc.

These are all possible indicators you need to take better care of your body so that it can take care of you. Stimulating your liver and kidney to eliminate toxins is one of the ways you can contribute to your body’s natural processes and create a healthy diet.

How does detoxing work?

There are many different ways to do a detox cleanse, from full starvation fasts to juice cleanses and simple food modifications. In general, detoxing includes at least one of the following approaches:

  • Drinking fresh fruit and vegetable juices, lots of water, smoothies, and tea
  • Fasting for a couple of days
  • Exercising on a regular basis
  • Taking herbs or supplements
  • Avoiding alcohol, coffee, cigarettes, and refined sugars altogether
  • Drinking liquids like salted water and lemon juice
  • Removing foods containing heavy metals, contaminants, and allergens from the diet

Final thoughts

The main focus when detoxing should be on making lifestyle changes that will eventually pay off down the road. Strict but short-term diets may be useless in the long run. Instead, you should focus on creating healthy habits that would better your life and improve all aspects of it.

Eating healthy foods rich in nutrients and proteins regularly is the gold standard when it comes to body cleansing. Natural supplements and vitamins could help you boost the benefits of detoxification and support you in your journey to a healthy lifestyle.

Cutting back on toxins found in foods may help you lose weight and get in shape. These toxins might be the reason why you find it difficult to make progress. Finding the right diet and combining it with healthy supplements might boost your energy and make you feel good from the inside out.
