5 Symptoms to Expect When Detoxing

By Richard Collier May 05, 2021

Do you want to purify your body and get rid of unwanted toxins? Wondering what to expect when detoxing? Here’s everything you should know before moving forward.

Once you decide to undergo a full-body detox, it’s normal to get curious about the most common detoxing symptoms. Since your body will go through detoxification, it will likely experience some side effects in the process. Knowing what to expect when detoxing will help you alleviate stress and prepare yourself for what’s coming.

Here are the 5 most common detoxing symptoms.

Headaches

Headache is the most common detoxing symptom that typically develops when you suddenly start to avoid caffeine, sugar, or dairy. It is likely to appear in the afternoon or evening after you’re finished with daily activities and your body goes on to experience a lack of its addictive “fuel”.

Getting rid of bad habits such as caffeine intake is often followed by a period of withdrawal when you start having headaches as your body is no longer getting what it’s used to. To alleviate these headaches, try to increase your water intake and aim for at least 10 glasses per day.

Fatigue

When you start detoxing your body, expect that you will also experience fatigue, tiredness, and possibly disrupted sleep patterns. Since you’re stimulating your body to purify itself more than it’s used to, it’s natural to expect a sudden loss of energy.

During detoxification, more effort and energy are directed towards toxins elimination, so you’ll likely need more naps throughout the day. It’s important to give your body what it needs so don’t feel bad about scheduling more time to sleep than you’re used to.

Food cravings

When trying to eliminate poor diet and lifestyle habits, it’s normal to have increased food cravings, especially in those areas you’re trying to change. For example, if you’re used to smoking every day but you suddenly stop, it’s natural that your body will crave it more for the first couple of days. Whatever you do, don’t give up on your goals. Push through and remember that this is only temporary until you get rid of those toxins from your body entirely.

Loose stools

One of the ways the body eliminates toxins is through frequent urination. Introducing healthy herbs and nutrients into your diet and removing bad habits can come off as a shock to your body, leading to possible loose stools and bowel irregularity.

The process of eliminating toxins and excess hormones is likely to stimulate frequent digestion and urination, given the fact the body is working harder than usual. That’s why drinking enough liquids is all the more essential, in order to restore nutrients and stay hydrated.

Nausea

Another common detoxing symptom is slight nausea. Hydration, a healthy diet, natural supplements, resting are some of the ways to get rid of it. Nausea will likely pass in a few days so don’t worry. That said, if you notice it worsening or you start vomiting, we suggest you talk to a healthcare professional about it.

Different bodies will have different experiences, depending on the level of toxins accumulated and the years of bad habits in the making. You may feel some symptoms you had before worsening especially when you start the detoxification process but remember that they’re usually mild and temporary. The bottom line is your body is working on purifying itself and that takes some time and discomfort.
